How To Bake Perfectly Flat Cakes Every Time!

Learn how to stop your cakes from doming with a simple technique that will give you perfectly baked cakes every time. Not only does the method prevent doming, but there is no wastage and less baking time, keeping your cakes even moister. In this tutorial, we used Sattina Golden Delight Madeira cake mix, our ‘go to’ product when baking!

Lining / Greasing Your Tin

You can line your tin with greaseproof paper, but a handy tip is to spread the inside of your tin with Release-a-Cake. Simply spread Release-a-Cake around the inside of the tin with a pastry brush or piece of kitchen paper and your cake will easily release from the tin perfectly shaped.

Preventing A Dome On Your Baked Cake

Separate the cake mix into two even amounts so that you can bake the cake in two halves. Pour the cake mix into a greased or lined tin, then cover the top with greaseproof paper. If you have a fan oven, it’s advisable to use tin foil to prevent the paper from blowing off. If you have two tins and a fan oven, you can bake both cakes together, otherwise, bake one then repeat the process with the second cake. This method slightly steams the cake, keeping it extra moist and prevents it doming.

Perfectly Baked!

How long the cake takes to bake will depend on the cake mix and the depth and size of the cake. To test that the cake is baked, insert a skewer or cake tester into the cake and if it comes out dry (and not sticky), the cake is cooked. It is important that you do not test the cake too early as it may sink in the middle, so make sure that the cake looks cooked, is golden and has a firm to gentle touch before inserting a skewer.

Turning The Cake Out

Leave the cake to cool for just a couple of minutes in the tin, then place a piece of greaseproof on a cooling rack, place over the tin and turn over to release the cake so that the top of the cake is now on the bottom.

This will help flatten the cake even more for easy assembly; you will not have to slice away any of the cake, simply layer with your favourite filling and cover or decorate as required.
