Let’s Make Valentine’s Cookies

We are taking a different approach to Valentine’s Day this year and focusing on ‘sharing the love’ with family and friends as well as partners. When you open the ‘Let’s Make Valentine’s Cookies’ baking box, you will find it contains all the essential products to bake at least 12 delicious heart cookies. We have included two different coloured icings, rose gold blush sprinkles and the ‘With Love’ embosser so that you or your family can enjoy designing and decorating cookies for the loved ones in your life – a great project to keep little ones busy too!

Let’s Get Started!

Step 1.  Baking The Cookies

Follow the instructions on the vanilla biscuit mix, they are easy to make as all you need to add is a little water and butter. When you have formed a pliable biscuit dough, pop in a plastic food bag and place in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling out; this will help you to cut out the heart cookies and keep their shape whilst lifting them onto the baking tray. To mark the square pattern into the dough, roll out on a sprinkling of flour then mark the lines with a palette knife. Lift onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven as instructed until golden brown. Remove and leave for 10 minutes before placing on a cooling rack to finish cooling before decorating.

Handy Tip
Add the butter at room temperature or if you are using straight from the fridge, grate the butter into the mixture.

Step 2.  Decorating The Cookies …

… With An Icing Drip Effect And Sprinkles

We have loosely described this as an icing drip effect as couldn’t think of a better way to describe it! Knead a little coloured icing and roll out to around 3-5mm in thickness on a sprinkling of icing sugar. Use the same size heart cutter as the biscuit you are decorating to cut out an icing heart before using the top curved cutting edge of the small heart cutter to cut a wiggly edge.

Soften the edge by rubbing your finger gently back and forth over it before attaching to the biscuit with a little jam. Brush the icing with edible glue and scatter with sprinkles.

Handy Tip
You can use any jam, preferably seedless, or try an alternative like chocolate spread or lemon curd. Spread just a little onto the biscuit but be careful not to go too close to the edge and keep within the area you are going to ice.

.

… Embossing ‘With Love’

Roll out the coloured icing on a sprinkling of icing sugar then position the ‘with love’ embosser onto it and press firmly down. Lift carefully away then position the cutter over the wording and cut out the heart shape. Spread your biscuit with jam, leaving about a 5mm gap around the edge so that the jam does not ooze out, and lift your icing heart into place.

.

… Double Coloured Hearts

To decorate your heart biscuits with two colours, cut out an icing heart shape in red then one in pink. The easiest method is to have a straight line down the middle as all you have to do is cut each heart in half lengthways and attach to the biscuit. To create a curved pattern which will meet perfectly, firstly cut away part of the red heart. Now position that cut out section over the pink icing heart and use as a guide to cut out the same shape in pink. This way you will be able to attach the pink and red sections onto your biscuit and hopefully they will meet perfectly together!

A Few Extra Ideas!

Why not let friends, family or even neighbours know you are thinking about them,

decorate cupcakes with the rose gold sprinkles and pop a decorated heart biscuit on top,

or make little gifts of home baked heart cookies – they look great dropped into a small cellophane bag tied with a red ribbon.
